What products will help get my oily complexion under control?

Rodan + Fields offers UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion SPF 20, a lightweight formula that protects and mattifies skin for a fresh, healthy-looking complexion. Physical sunscreens protect against UVA and UVB rays that can lead to sun damage, post-acne marks and uneven skin tone. Featuring Azelosome, this non-comedogenic formula controls excess oil production to help prevent clogged pores. Antioxidants and botanicals work to brighten, protect and soothe skin. Use as part of the UNBLEMISH Regimen for best results.

We also offer UNBLEMISH Blot Papers with Zincidone on specially treated Japanese rice paper, clinically proven to immediately reduce surface oil by 84% and reduce oil production over time by 21%. In fact, this product received Allure magazine’s Best of Beauty award. Gently press the lightly powdered side against the face, concentrating on areas with excess oil. Repeat with a fresh paper as often as necessary.

Is 20 too young to start using your ANTI-AGE Regimen and the Multi-Function Eye Cream?

As we grow older, our skin’s inherent anti-aging mechanisms diminish: defenses weaken, critical processes slow and the rate of breakdown accelerates. In the Doctors’  medical practices, they constantly see the need for a daily skincare regimen that replenishes or restores what’s lacking and prevents or interrupts the aging process.

To address this need, Rodan + Fields offers its ANTI–AGE Regimen which takes proven pharmaceutical science and applies it to the prevention and correction of the visible signs of skin aging. By strategically incorporating anti-aging peptides, this daily system works on multiple skin levels to address the key causes of skin aging: decreased cell turnover, diminished collagen production, dryness and the cumulative effects of environmental damage.

So begin today. No matter how old you are, it’s never too soon (or too late) to start ensuring a healthy, youthful-looking future for your skin.

Do you still dream?

Do you still dream?  No, I don’t mean do you dream at night when you sleep … even if you do, you might be like my husband, too exhausted to actually remember that you dreamed about being on the riding mower, chasing your favorite childhood dog into the Mexican restaurant down the street to sit down with your wife & three kids and watch Phineas & Ferb.  Sometimes I wish I didn’t remember those silly dreams either!  Ah, I digress…no, I mean do you “dream” about what you will be when you “grow up”, what your life will be like?  Are you one of the rare people that still has an incredible vision for your life?  Or are you like so many people…beaten down, exhausted & just “surviving” day to day.  Did you, at some point, give up on those great dreams that you had as a child?  My seven-year-old dreams of being President one moment & the next he will be a pro-football player, “for sure, Mom”.  I encourage him, but I remember a time when a guy I went to college with said he wanted to be President & I basically rolled my eyes at him.  Ugh!  What a horrible reaction!   Somebody has to be President … why would I roll my eyes?  What a worthy goal!  But at some point, for many people, some big bully, whether a “friend”, parent, teacher, coach or other “well-meaning” adult convinced us that our dreams were silly, not pursuit-worthy, or just down-right unreachable.  At some point, someone wrote on my chalkboard that I was homely, I was too idealistic (that was a big one) and my dreams would never come true.  How sad, that I have turned 40 this year & just realizing or remembering that I have the eraser to my own chalkboard!  What did they write on your chalkboard?  Too fat?  Too skinny?  Not smart enough?  Not good at math?  Too quiet?  Too ambitious?  What a sad state that we project our failures to reach our dreams onto others & spend time convincing them that the best way to get through life is to “manage your expectations” and “don’t get your hopes up”.  As if a little disappointment in life is an emotion that we are unable to conquer and overcome.  Now, don’t get me wrong … there is a time where realism should reign.  Genetics, education & God-given gifts will determine some of our life’s fortunes & achievements.  Playing anything that involved a ball and at least one other person was really never on my list of strengths & I’m okay with that.  I’m great at individual sports!  There is a philosophy out there that you can improve on your weaknesses by focusing your time & energy on them, and, I agree.  But, I believe more strongly that your greatest results will come when focusing on your strengths & capitalizing on your God-given gifts.  However, many of the dreams we have given up on are not at all dreams that are unachievable because of gifts we don’t have, they are just dreams we’ve given up spending effort & time to achieve because we have convinced ourselves that we won’t succeed, so why try?  One of my favorite things about being in the direct sales industry is the realization that almost all of the dreams I have ARE achievable for me with a lot of dedication, persistence & hard work.  Some of my dreams are routine … healthy, happy, generous children, a happy & fun marriage, a little “fun” money in the bank, college funds for the kids & vacation money.  Other dreams of mine are what we called BHAGs at one of my favorite jobs.  BIG, HAIRY, AUDACIOUS GOALS.  Like replacing my husband’s income so he can do something he truly loves, instead of just heading to work to cover the mortgage payment & healthcare insurance premiums.  Another is having funds to care for our family members, time to travel to see & serve the world, and more money so we can give more monthly to the charities that we love.  My biggest BHAG is to set up a foundation to save children around the world from anything that steals their childhood, whether disease, dirty water, poverty, loss of parents, childhood labor or slavery.  And, through this foundation to show them the love of our amazing Christ Jesus.  For me to reach these financial goals I realized I needed a great vehicle & for me that vehicle is direct sales with Rodan+Fields Dermatologists.  What are your “regular” dreams?  Do you have some BHAG dreams?  Your vehicle to achieve your dreams may not be direct sales … the point, is that you need a vehicle to get from where you are now to the achievement of your dreams.  And, what to do once you’ve achieved your dreams?  Dream some more.  Dream bigger.  Choose.  Work hard.  And smile at the possibilities for your life.  I’m beginning to realize that we aren’t meant to retire … perhaps from a job, yes … but not from dreaming, or from living.  We should always be dreaming & always achieving our dreams.  Life is much more joyful this way.

Myth Busters: Honey I Shrunk My Pores!!

Myth Busters

Derm RF | July 27, 2010 at 6:53 pm | Categories: Myth Busters | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-bb

MYTH: “Honey, I Shrunk My Pores!”

Contrary to popular belief, you cannot make your pores bigger or smaller. The size of your pores is genetic and unalterable. What is manageable is the appearance of your pore size. Excess oil production and the accumulation of dead skin cells can make pores appear enlarged at any age. As skin matures, the collagen fibers supporting your pores slacken, making them appear even larger. The good news is, advances in skincare empower you to make your pores appear smaller in multiple ways. First, hydroxy acids help clear pores of unwanted dead skin cells. Second, clay masks help absorb excess oil production and temporarily tighten the pore’s opening. And, finally, anti-aging products with peptides increase collagen production, helping to fortify the pore structure. These three easy steps will keep your pores looking clear and tight.

Confessions of a Dermatologist

Confessions of a Dermatologist

Dr. Kathy Fields | July 26, 2010 at 7:02 pm | Categories: Confessions of a Dermatologist | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-b7

By Dr. Kathy Fields

Between visiting family in both Chicago and Florida, business travel across the country, and upcoming college campus visits, I practically live in my suitcase. I am constantly unpacking and repacking clothes, shoes, toiletries and skincare for different locales. And when it comes to what has become almost a weekly routine, this derm’s confession: I’m a slave to my pores.

Wherever I travel throughout the country, my priority is keeping my pores happy, regardless of climate. So I cater to them each and every day. When jet setting to Miami during the hot, humid summers, I pack a clay-based cleansing mask to unclog pores; an oil-free mattifying sunscreen and oil-blotting papers to reduce oil on-the-go. When I travel to Chicago during the cold, dry winters, my focus changes to moisturization (if skin gets too dry it will start creating excess oil, leading to clogged, enlarged pores). I bring a heavy moisturizer to apply on damp skin after showering to lock in moisture. Regardless of where I am, my daily routine always includes a product containing hydroxy acids to keep my pores clear, and retinol to fortify my skin structure so my pores stay tight and younger looking.

This may seem like a lot to go through, but at the end of the day it’s all worth it to look as young as you feel. Skin is a beautiful thing … wear it well.

Common Questions: Do You Struggle with Oily Skin?

Common Questions

I get these little white bumps over my cheeks when I use my scrubs. Why do I break out?

We are the first to say that exfoliation is a key to looking younger, but it is possible to get too much of a good thing. Being too aggressive can remove the protective barrier of the skin and begin a cascade of irritation.

The skin has a delicate lipid barrier that holds in moisture and keeps out irritants. If this barrier is distressed from too much exfoliation, it will alert you by appearing dry, feeling tight, and becoming red/rashy. Small fissures can form and allow bacteria and toxins in that irritate skin. Small white “milia” bumps appear as a result of the skin forming a cocoon around bacteria and toxins.

Initially, exfoliation is tricky. There should be enough cells shed to signal skin renewal but not so many that the skin becomes dry, tight or irritated. The secret is not to overdo it. If your skin looks red and angry, becomes painful or sensitive, or you see small white “pimples” after exfoliation, give it a rest and use a bland cleanser, hydrocortisone 1% and moisturizer for a few days while your skin recovers.

My face is so oily that I wash it three to four times a day. How many times a day can I wash it?

Washing your face more than twice a day to remove excess oil will eventually cause an increase in oil production due to a rebound phenomenon, making your skin more sensitive. A better approach is to use UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion SPF 20 to protect and mattify skin for a fresh, healthy-looking complexion. And to blot away surface shine throughout the day, use UNBLEMISH  Blot Papers with Zincidone™.

Habits that Haunt ... Too much of a good thing...

Habits that Haunt

Stripping Your Face with Harsh Astringents

Using an astringent with a high percentage of alcohol to get that “deep clean” feeling is actually hurting your skin. Unfortunately, these harsh astringents remove much more than dirt and oil from your face. They will also strip the skin of essential moisture, compromising the barrier. In response, your skin actually produces MORE oil to compensate for the dryness and the vicious cycle never ends. We recommend using a treatment toner containing beneficial ingredients like salicylic acid to gently clean pores while protecting your delicate moisture barrier.

Do You Have Large Pores?

I Can’t Live Without My … Rodan + Fields Employee Favorite

Derm RF | July 19, 2010 at 6:59 pm | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-aJ

By Char Knox

Vice President of Business Development at Rodan + Fields® Dermatologists

Pores have always been a big skin concern of mine. When I was younger I never thought twice about them—it was as if they didn’t exist. But in recent years, they grew larger and more noticeable on my face. Last year the Doctors shared a skincare tip that forever changed my life … the ANTI-AGE Gentle Exfoliating Wash doubles as a two-minute pore refining mask. Three times a week before going to bed I apply a thin layer of the wash and let it dry for about two minutes. When I wash the mask off, my skin feels firmer and my pores are much less noticeable. This insider tip completely changed the way I feel about my skin … armed with it as my secret beauty weapon I stand taller, straighter and feel more confident sharing my face with the world.
