AMP MD for Acne Scarring...

Common Questions

Mary Radford, RN | August 26, 2011 at 6:38 pm | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-rm

I was told that acne can stay with you for years—what changes should I expect to see as I get older?

As we age, pimples tend to move south on the face, with adults more commonly experiencing acne around the mouth and on the jawline, while teen acne tends to cluster on the forehead and cheeks. Overall, pimples on adults are fewer in number but bigger in size. Regardless of where you are breaking out, our UNBLEMISH Regimen is clinically proven to treat and help prevent the entire acne cycle. Use the regimen as directed at any age to help clear skin for a healthy, calm complexion.

My skin has really rough texture and pits following all those years of acne. I don’t break out any longer and want to know what to use to smooth my skin?

If your skin is free of acne, we recommend our ANTI-AGE AMP MD™ System and ANTI-AGE Regimen to help smooth texture, increase firmness, promote evenness of skin, and decrease the appearance of pores. However, if you are still experiencing breakouts, we suggest that you utilize the UNBLEMISH Regimen to address the complex issues associated with acne: red inflammation, excess oil and post-acne dark marks. Do not use ANTI-AGE AMP MD on active acne.

Can You Outgrow Acne?

Myth Busters

Derm RF | August 23, 2011 at 7:14 pm | Tags: acne, adult acne | Categories: Myth Busters | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-rd

Myth: I grew out of Acne

Think you’ve outgrown your acne? Think again. Many make the mistake of thinking they’ve been cured of their acne and no longer need an acne regimen when actually their skin is under control because of the regimen they’ve been using. The truth is, acne is not a curable condition, but it is preventable with consistent care. Acne is also cyclical and can fluctuate depending on stress, hormones, environment and lifestyle. Teens tend to have acne for six to seven years while the average adult woman can suffer from acne for up to 20 years.

Ultimately, what keeps skin acne-free is consistent and continuous adherence to a skincare regimen designed to prevent, treat, and diminish the appearance of acne. And trust us, if your skin is looking clear, it’s because the medicines are working. So stick with it!

Antibiotics for Acne

Common Questions

Mary Radford, RN | August 19, 2011 at 9:33 pm | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-r3

My son has been on antibiotics to treat his acne for two years and although it has somewhat reduced his breakouts I worry about long-term effects.

We recommend you talk with your son’s doctor about your concerns. In addition, you can start him on our UNBLEMISH Regimen, clinically proven to treat and help prevent the entire acne cycle. Use the regimen as directed and be sure to read the entire inserted brochure to take advantage of special tips from Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields.

Can I use my Clarisonic brush with the UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash?

Our cleansers are specifically formulated to address a skin issue and they are to be gently massaged with only the fingers--no brushes or wash cloths. The Rodan + Fields® UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash deeply cleanses pores and delivers acne-healing sulfur to the skin. Formulated with chamomile (bisabolol) and aloe, this formulation calms the skin to further support the clearing process. Sulfur is the only acne medication that soothes skin. Using a brush would waste the cleanser on the bristles and also defeat the purpose of calming skin and could aggravate blemishes.

Ditch that 10x Mirror!!

Habits that Haunt

Derm RF | August 16, 2011 at 9:29 pm | Categories: Habits that Haunt | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-r0

Living by Your 10x Mirror

Turns out your 10x mirror may do wonders for eyebrow plucking accuracy, but when it comes to blemishes it can distort reality and not only warp the way you see yourself, but also the way you perceive the world sees you. It’s true that taking a closer look at problems may help to solve them, but it’s also true that if you go looking for problems, you’ll be sure to find some, even when they don’t exist.

At 10 times magnification, even regular pores can look like blackheads.  And if you start picking at this, you will actually make your pores appear bigger over time. Your best bet? Take a step back and ditch the 10x mirror. If you can’t see it with the naked eye … there is no need to worry about it.

Acne: An Ageless Issue

A pimple on picture day? A sudden acne breakout the morning of that big interview? The connection between blemishes and big days is no coincidence ... multiple studies, including one conducted by Stanford University, have proven the relationship between stress and breakouts.

As summer ends, back-to-school stress is mounting for parents and kids alike which means acne is flaring. And while you want to share in the excitement for the new school year with your kids, you probably weren’t counting on sharing acne medicine with them. But, regardless of age, the hormones that spike when stress is present are the same ones that kick start the acne cycle in all of us. That means if you’re preparing to hit the books, or just preparing to get your kids ready to hit the books, now is the time to amp up your acne skincare routine to prevent blemishes.

Whether you’re starting your search for that perfect school backpack, navigating the emotional minefield of back-to-school shopping or planning a Labor Day Party, Derm RF is here to help keep your acne and your stress under control.  Tune in this month for advice from Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields on keeping acne at bay, to read about our top acne mythbusters and for a chance to win a free UNBLEMISH Regimen.

Sincerely,

Your Derm RF Team

Myth Busters

Myth Busters

Derm RF | July 21, 2011 at 7:19 pm | Categories: Myth Busters | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-pK

MYTH: I don’t ever burn and always tan so I don’t have to worry about skin cancer or aging from sun exposure.

While fair skin tones do tend to burn easier, those with olive and dark skin tones don’t have a get-out-of-jail-free card when it comes to the sun and its effects. In fact, while skin cancer rates are indeed higher in Caucasians, they are increasing among all ethnicities and it may be because not burning easily can be a curse rather than a blessing when it comes to avoiding skin cancers. A sunburn is a bit like an alarm that goes off a little too late (but better late than never), telling us our bodies are in danger. Skin that doesn’t burn gives us a false sense of security that masks the sun damage skin is really getting.

Men and women of ALL colors shapes and sizes experience sun effects ranging from skin damage, to premature aging to, in some cases, even death, so don’t slack off on sun protection. Regardless of skin tone or our ability to tan, we’re all one under the sun.

The Truth About Freckles

Common Questions

Mary Radford, RN | July 22, 2011 at 6:07 pm | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-pP

Can the sun be addictive?

Yes! Some people actually have a real addiction to the pleasure of tanning. Studies show that the UV rays trigger the release of endorphins – morphine-like substances in the brain that block pain and heighten pleasure – resulting in a natural “high.” Just like smoking, this is a habit you will have to break if you want your skin to stand the test of time.

My children have had freckles their entire life but I heard that this is sun damage—is this true?

No one is born with freckles. While they might look cute, they aren’t so adorable when we understand they are a sign of skin injury in much the same way that an age spot is evidence of sun damage in an adult. Freckles are the body’s response to sun damage, an indicator that you need to slather on broad-spectrum sunscreen or risk significant damage that will appear later in life.  From now on, be diligent with sunscreen.

Great Ingredients for Fighting Acne

Ingredients of the Month

Derm RF | August 11, 2011 at 10:51 pm | Categories: Ingredients of the Month | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-qz

Benzoyl Peroxide

For good reason benzoyl peroxide has been considered a top acne antagonist for some time. Today it’s considered better than ever, thanks in large part to recent scientific studies further validating its acne fighting power as even more effective than oral antibiotics. Recent advances in formulations and delivery methods have even further increased its ability to treat and prevent acne.

For maximum efficacy, benzoyl peroxide does require a bit of delicate handling as far as formulas go. Most important is to keep the ingredient separate from other ingredients in the formula so it is stable prior to application on skin. Find stable benzoyl peroxide in Rodan + Fields® UNBLEMISH Dual Intensive Acne Treatment, which protects benzoyl peroxide in a dual-chamber delivery system to ensure optimal delivery.

Just remember, while benzoyl peroxide won’t bleach skin, it is an active ingredient and can bleach towels and pillowcases. Opt for white, or even better yet, look for a new line of bleach resistant towels now available at most stores.

Zincidone

Danger! Oil spill! If you’re acne prone, where there’s oil, there’s acne … so minimizing oil production and absorbing surface oils is essential to avoiding acne accidents and maintaining a clear complexion.

Zincidone, a mineral based ingredient, provides both benefits and should be included in any anti-acne regimen. In fact, in a recent clinical study, blot papers containing Zincidone immediately reduced surface oil by up to 84%, reduced oil production over time by up to 21%, and with consistent use reduced surface acne-causing bacterial growth.

Find Zincidone in Rodan + Fields® UNBLEMISH Blot Papers.

Myth Busters: Sun is Good for Acne

Myth Busters

Derm RF | August 9, 2011 at 4:59 pm | Tags: acne, sun exposure | Categories: Myth Busters | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-qv

Myth: Sun is Good For Acne

It’s time for the sun to go down on the myth that sun is good for acne. Although a little sunshine might clear up acne for a day and any tan you get will mask redness, over time sun exposure will actually increase buildup of dead skin cells, clogging pores and exacerbating acne. In addition, the sun darkens acne spots resulting in those unwanted souvenirs lasting even longer.

So slap on the sunscreen and stick to your acne regimen come rain or shine.

Don't Pick!!

Habits that Haunt

Derm RF | August 2, 2011 at 4:39 pm | Tags: acne | Categories: Habits that Haunt | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-qn

Picking Your Zits

Contrary to that little voice inside your head, picking your zits will not make your pimple go away faster, it will actually make it last longer. Picking only adds insult to injury and actually makes your skin work longer and harder to clean up the mess you’ve created, leaving behind unwanted reminders in the form of discolored spots and scars.

The best remedy is to take a hands-off approach and stay consistently on a comprehensive regimen designed to interrupt acne at all stages of pimple formation, including reducing oil production, unclogging pores, killing bacteria, reducing inflammation, and minimizing discolorations and scarring.

Trust us on this one! This is one haunting habit you can’t afford not to break.
