The Race for Great Skin ….

The Doctor is in … Slow and steady wins the race for great skin!

Meetdrfields-v2-cropped

By Dr. Kathy Fields

Every year the “theme” of the holiday season at my office is the same: panic! Come December, patients are suddenly impatient to get party-perfect and picture-perfect skin. In an effort to look fantastic for the holidays, many jump from salon treatment to salon treatment. But often their efforts backfire and soon their skin is inflamed from too much aggressive attention, a condition dermatologists call “Tandem Irritation,” and they end up in my practice searching for solutions to calm their skin.
If you find yourself treading similar waters, the key is to take a step back and restore your skin’s barrier. Incorporate skin-soothing products that contain clinically proven ingredients to fortify skin’s natural moisture barrier, calm visible redness and reduce irritation.
While it’s tempting to consider jumping for holiday specials, when it comes to skincare, remember—slow and steady wins the race. Real results come from consistent, daily application of clinically proven products. So limit the aggressive holiday skin treatments and stay on track with skincare tailored to your special needs.

Habits that Haunt: Sleeping with Your Makeup on

Habits that Haunt: Sleeping with Your Makeup on

Aside from ruining your linens, sleeping with your makeup on means that you skipped your nightly skincare routine and missed out on your skin’s best rejuvenation hours. Skin is most receptive at night, which means your skincare products work harder for you while you sleep. Take it from us, consistency is the key to achieving healthy-looking skin. Do your best this holiday season to stick to your nightly skincare routine … your great skin will be the best gift you give yourself.

Do you live for the weekend? Or dread Monday?

Imagine...

You are sitting on a park bench with two billionaires, one sitting on each side of you. They offer you a business partnership where you can use their name, their warehouse, and their distribution process so you won't ever have to stock up on products or worry about finding time to deliver them.

They tell you they will provide you with all the technology, training and resources to become a business owner. Plus they will show you how to condense 30 years of a conventional career into 3-5 years of hard work.

Then they tell you that YOU can now be your own boss and be in charge of your own life. Better yet, you will be the one to decide on how much money you want to make.

And just when you think it can't get any more intriguing, they say...

Imagine, for a few moments, living your life on YOUR own terms...freedom to come and go as you please when you please, traveling, paying for school tuition for the year with one check, getting to raise your own children without the need for daycare, buying that new sports car, dress, or dream home!

Who would say no to this?

Before YOU say no, message me.

Spend 4 minutes listening to these two entrepreneurs tell you about their new company & your opportunity to partner with them.  And, if that peaks your interest, spend 10 minutes talking to me.  It could be the best 14 minutes of your career!!

The best thing is....well, start reading again from the top!

Who Do You Know in Newport News, VA?

Are You Destined for Dull Skin?

Myth Busters: Dull Skin Is a Normal Part of Aging

Dull skin is not your destiny; it’s actually an effect of sun damage and can be reversed with the right regimen. We recommend products that not only gently exfoliate but also include hydroquinone to lighten and brighten skin. Combine that with consistent use of sunscreen all year long, and smooth skin will be an ageless quality.

A Penny or A Million?

Would you rather have a million dollars given to you today or a penny that is doubled for the next 30 days? Take a look at the power of leveraged income. It's like compound interest that makes your money work for you and it's recession proof. I wish I had learned this lesson in college. My career would have taken a very different path!

Summer Clutter ...

Habits that Haunt: Piling on the Anti-Aging Products Before You’ve Cleared Summer Clutter

Dull skin, brown spots and freckles are all signs of sun damage. And no amount of anti-aging serums, lotions and potions will ever reverse their appearance. Before you get aggressive with your anti-aging efforts, clean the slate with a hydroquinone-based regimen to clear away the skin clutter. Not only will your skin look and feel smoother and more even, your anti-aging products will be more effective at addressing other issues like lines and wrinkles when the time comes.

Don't Pack Away Your Sunscreen!

Habits that Haunt: Packing Away the Sunscreen Along with Your Swimsuit

The pool days of 2012 may be over, but the UV rays aren’t. The earth orbits the sun 365 days a year (actually, it’s 365 ¼ to be precise), which means your skin is always exposed, rain or shine. The best rule of thumb is that if you can see the sun, even if you’re sitting inside next to a window, the sun can see you, and you’re exposed to damaging UV rays.
So start the day with SPF and keep it handy so you can reapply to your face, hands, neck and arms throughout the day. Trust us, it’s the first rule of great skin!

Hydroquinone & Exfoliants

Ingredients of the Month: Hydroquinone and Exfoliants

Hydroquinone

Used by dermatologists to safely even skin tone by fading hyperpigmented areas, hydroquinone is the only FDA approved skin lightening ingredient and is unmatched in its clinically proven ability to lighten discoloration. While it’s available by prescription at a four percent concentration, the over-the-counter- approved two percent formulas are equally effective over time—and without the sensitivity side effects some people experience at a higher concentration. But be sure to use a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin all year round, or your efforts will be in vain.
You can find hydroquinone in Rodan + Fields® REVERSE Skin Lightening Toner and REVERSE Skin Lightening Treatment.

Exfoliants

The term “exfoliate” literally means to remove layers. In skin care, exfoliation is a key component of undoing summer damage.  By removing layers of damaged, dull, dead skin cells, you can instantly improve the tone and texture of your skin and enhance the effectiveness of your other skincare products. Look for products that contain chemical exfoliants such as hydroxy acid or physical exfoliants like polyethylene beads, dimethicone beads, and sugar and salt for best results.
You’ll find both hydroxy acids and polyethylene beads in Rodan + Fields REVERSE Deep Exfoliating Wash.

Schooling Your Skin

Letter from the Editor: Schooling Your Skin

September 1, 2012 at 10:03 am  Leave a comment

September is here, and across America pool bags have been replaced by book bags and swimsuits have been retired in favor of the latest fall fashions. But just because you’ve packed away beach towels and flip-flops doesn’t mean all evidence of your fun in the sun is gone. Your skin is often a reminder of just how much sun exposure you received during the “dog days of summer.” The good news is, you can clean the slate by registering your skin for an advanced course in anti-aging. What’s on the skin syllabus? Some serious studying up on just what your skin needs to make the grade this fall.
If you want out of skin detention, tune in to Derm RF all month long for tips and tricks from Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields on making the sins of summer fade so you can get an “A” in anti-aging 101.

The Truth About Ticks & Lyme Disease

Myth Busters: All Ticks Carry Lyme Disease

Ticks have gotten a bad rap for carrying Lyme disease, but in truth, only deer ticks carry the disease, and not all deer ticks are infected. Regardless, if you have been out and about in grassy or wooded areas, do a full body check for ticks as soon as you get home. It takes more than 24 hours to transmit Lyme disease so early detection is key. As you look yourself over, pay special attention to the back of your neck, armpits and scalp.
If you do find a tick, don’t panic. Removal is simple. Contact your health care provider for next steps.

Habits that Haunt: Peeling Your Sunburn

Habits that Haunt: Peeling Your Sunburn

If you try to fast track the peeling skin from your sunburn by pulling or picking, you’ll only slow the healing process by exposing raw skin that’s not yet ready to protect you properly. Instead, slough off dead skin cells by gently buffing with a washcloth in the tub or shower; just remember to go easy and refrain from scrubbing.  Keep in mind, your skin knows best. Let it take the lead and you’ll be back to looking lovely, faster.

Tanorexic or beautifully bronzed, as tans fade, our summer skin follies come into full view. It’s true that when the endless summer days finally come to an end, we’ll all have some reckoning to do, but some of us will have more skin sins to pay for than others.
Dark, lightly toasted, red or just rosy, all sun exposure is damage and your skin has a duty to your overall health to fight back. Unfortunately, the battle scars of your skin’s fight to survive, which appear as brown spots and dullness on your face, often last longer than you’d like. What’s worse, sun damage is cumulative throughout your life … ignoring any brown spots today won’t mean they’ll fade away next summer, they’ll only become more pronounced.
Take a look at these two women*. As a dermatologist, just one look at this picture tells me more about their sun habits than their eating habits. They may be the same age chronologically, but you’d never know from their appearance. The sun is the ultimate aging accelerator and it shows!
Regardless of your past sun sins, there is hope … it is possible to get a fresh start and “clear the slate” of sun damage with a hydroquinone-based regimen to lighten, brighten, exfoliate and protect.
And if you’re craving that sun-kissed glow, don’t fret. Just do what I do and get it the healthy way—from a bottle. Using a sunless tanner to faux tan has real benefits that extend beyond bronzing. As you enjoy the remaining days of summer, just remember to cover up, seek shade and slather on the sunscreen. Practicing safe sun can not only save your looks, it can save your life.

Are You Working on Your Base Tan??

Myth: A Base Tan Can Prevent a Sunburn

This time of year we hear time and again about people working on their “base tan” before summer arrives, thinking that catching a few rays now will protect their skin from getting burnt throughout the summer. But, to set the record straight, there is no such thing as a base tan. Any amount and type of sun exposure damages skin, and the damage is cumulative, so a little here and there all adds up and contributes to premature aging and an increased risk of developing skin cancer. As you prepare to bare, your safest bet is to fake a glow and protect from head to toe.

Clean Up Your Act

Letter from the Editor

by Derm RF

Clean Up Your Act

It’s spring time … and you know what that means: time for some good ol’ spring cleaning. Despite the hard work this entails, getting rid of all the dust, clutter and grime is always so rewarding.

When it comes to your skin, the same rules apply. Now is the time to clear up your skin, slough away dead skin cells and amp up your skincare routine so you can reveal a more radiant, youthful complexion. This all starts with exfoliation, and when you incorporate gentle exfoliation into your daily or weekly routine, the rewards abound. You’ll notice a brighter, more luminous complexion and, believe it or not, a cleaner house.

Yes, you read right. Did you know that 70-90 percent of what we call household dust is really just the dead skin cells we’re constantly shedding? Gross but true, and by exfoliating we can reduce this dust significantly. And what’s more, research shows that each time you exfoliate, the removal of those layers actually triggers key communication with the skin cells below, sending them the message that it’s time to get up and get moving. In other words, the more you exfoliate, the quicker your overall skin cell renewal cycle will be and, ultimately, the more youthful and radiant your skin will look.

Tune in to Derm RF this month to get your skin up to speed with the best and most effective ways to exfoliate away the dusty skin clutter so you can spring into spring with brand new skin. From unmasking exfoliation myths to offering you a chance to win skincare prizes, April is all about revealing a brand new you.

Sincerely,

Your Derm RF Team

Myth Busters: The Truth About Lip Lines

Myth: Lip Lines are Caused by Smoking

While it’s absolutely true that smoking causes lip lines around the mouth over time, they aren’t the only culprit.  And you can’t assume a person has been or is a smoker just because his or her lips are fringed with fine lines.

Sucking from a straw or running a kissing booth will lead to accelerated lip lines just like smoking. This is caused by the continual mechanical motion of pursing the lips.  So whether or not you smoke, minimizing the motions of the muscles around the mouth is the best way to avoid those lines. Because as we like to say ... the best wrinkle is the one you never get.

MythBusters: A Pore is a Door

New post on Derm RF

Myth Busters

by Derm RF

Myth: a Pore Is a Door

Contrary to the popular teen myth, a splash of cold water cannot close your pores. Pores are not doors that can be opened or closed and their size doesn’t change. But their appearance can. Pores that are filled with dirt, debris and bacteria certainly look bigger because they’re more noticeable.

Minimizing the appearance of pores is best done with skincare containing hydroxy acids to stop dead cells from accumulating inside the pores, kaolin clay to tighten, and advanced peptides to maintain skin firmness.

What's the Point of Sunscreen When It's Snowing?

Common Questions

by Mary Radford, RN

I’m using the ANTI-AGE Regimen as directed and my skin has recently become dry and a little flaky. Should I stop using the Daily Cleansing Mask?

Skin and skincare needs change over time. Dryness could be the results of a few things: changes in diet, hydration, weather or activity levels. The ANTI-AGE Regimen helps to increase cell turnover. As new cells push up toward the skin's surface, the old cells are forced to fall off and unfortunately some cells won't let go. As a result, skin appears dry and flaky. We suggest that you gently massage the ENHANCEMENTS Micro-Dermabrasion Paste on wet skin one to three times a week as tolerated in place of the ANTI-AGE Daily Cleansing Mask to lift off flaky skin.

If your skin still feels dry, we recommend applying ESSENTIALS Moisturize with Melaslow several times a day, as needed.

My sister told me to wear sunscreen in the winter but it’s snowing and cloudy—what’s the point?

The aging rays of the sun, UVA rays, are present 365 days a year, rain or shine, sunup to sundown. They are as strong at 7 a.m. as they are at noon and even 7 p.m.  They are so powerful they can penetrate clouds, rain, snow, glass, some plastics and clothing (especially loose cotton weaves and wet fabrics).

UVA rays destroy our collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and sagging over time. UVA rays also stimulate pigment-producing melanocytes to release brown melanin, resulting in “liver spots” on the face, hands and chest—a true hallmark of aged skin.

Take your sister’s advice and protect your skin year-round with a Rodan + Fields broad spectrum sunscreen that is designed for your skin type every morning before you leave the house, and reapply throughout the day.

Myth: 20 Plus 20 Equals 40

Myth: 20 Plus 20 Equals 40

When it comes to SPF, traditional math doesn’t apply. The SPF 20 in your foundation layered with the SPF 20 in your sunscreen does not equal an SPF of 40. It’s more a matter of quality than quantity.

What layering does provide is accuracy. The truth is, most people don’t apply enough of their SPF to really deliver the SPF benefits and rarely apply it evenly on the first go-round. To get the promised benefits, multiple layers are essential and adding an SPF sunscreen on top of an SPF moisturizer and/or foundation is the best way to insure you’re truly covered.

So, do you layer up?
