Ingredient of the Week: Retinol

Ingredient of the Week

Derm RF | January 28, 2011 at 12:14 am | Categories: Ingredient of the Week | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-i1

Retinol

Incorporating retinol into your daily anti-aging skincare routine is a perfect way to turn over a new leaf for the new year. By sloughing off old, dead cells and encouraging the growth of healthy, young cells, retinol is tops for encouraging cell renewal and improving skin’s texture. Retinol also helps stop collagen breakdown for less-lined, firmer, brighter skin. Find cell-renewing retinol in Rodan + Fields® ANTI-AGE Night Renewing Serum. Take your results one step further by using the AMP MD™ Micro-Channeling Tool before ANTI-AGE Night Renewing Serum to maximize the delivery of retinol into the skin’s upper layer.

Myth Busters: Reading the Labels Always Gives You the Answers You Want

Myth Busters

Derm RF | January 26, 2011 at 1:16 am | Categories: Myth Busters | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-hZ

My product label contains a specific ingredient, so it will deliver the results I have heard about.

Not necessarily. For an ingredient to be effective in a product, it must be used at clinically effective levels. Sometimes ingredients are only formulated for “label claims,” meaning the product contains the ingredient but not at the level that has been proven effective. While it may be difficult to determine if there is a sufficient level of an ingredient in the product to be efficacious, watch out for products that advertise the benefits of the ingredient rather than the benefits of the total product. In virtually all cases, it is not just about the individual ingredient but rather the combined benefits of the  ingredient, the application and the formulation.

How can I get the best results from the REVERSE Regimen?

1)      Read the entire REVERSE Regimen brochure and take advantage of the concise information, directions and tips regarding your skin condition and the REVERSE products that repair and protect hyper-pigmented, sun-damaged skin. This collection of the RF Connection’s most frequently requested information will assist you in getting the best results.

2)      The REVERSE Regimen is introduced slowly, so during the first three weeks use a gentle cleanser, toner, moisturizer and sunscreen when not using the regimen.

3)      Avoid other forms of exfoliation such as scrubs, peels, mechanical brushes, wash cloths, professional microdermabrasion and moisturizers with retinol or AHAs during this time.

4)      Be gentle and allow the products to do the work. Just use the fingertips to gently massage the Deep Exfoliating Wash evenly over the face. Allow the polyethylene beads and lactic acid to loosen bonds between cells and buff off dry skin.

5)      Avoid the sun and seek shade. Re-apply sunscreen every two hours to reduce pigment stimulation.

6)      If skin begins to feel dry, layer a moisturizer over the REVERSE Skin Lightening Treatment.

How can I get the best results from the UNBLEMISH Regimen?

1)      Read the entire UNBLEMISH Regimen brochure and take advantage of the concise information, directions and tips regarding your skin condition and the UNBLEMISH products that penetrate to stop acne and reduce post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

2)      The UNBLEMISH Regimen is introduced slowly so during the first three weeks use a gentle cleanser, toner, moisturizer and sunscreen when not using the regimen.

3)      Avoid aggravating acne with exfoliating products such as scrubs, peels, mechanical brushes, wash cloths, professional microdermabrasion and moisturizers with retinol or AHAs during this time.

4)      Be sure to give the OTC medicated cleanser enough time to be effective by gently massaging the Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash for about 45 seconds (approximately the amount of time it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice). Just use the fingertips and do not stay in one place or apply extra pressure.

5)      Use the UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash as a 10-minute pore clearing mask three times a week to soothe redness and reduce pore plugs.

6)      If skin begins to feel dry, layer a moisturizer over UNBLEMISH  Dual Intensive Acne Treatment.

Amp It Up

I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions. If I did, the list of all the things I want to accomplish or change about myself would be too long and feel overwhelming.  Instead, I  come up with a catchphrase  that serves the purpose of shaping my attitude toward events for the upcoming year. It reflects the world around me, helps put my daily life into perspective, and motivates me to think differently. For example, “I’m stoked” (a common Southern California surfer’s idiom) seemed fitting for the riding high prosperity and sense of abundance in 2007. It reminded me to appreciate all of my blessings and recognize that life is full of dynamic cycles. Neither good times nor bad ones (fortunately) last forever, something we all tend to forget. It also set me on a path to give back. So, when, 2008 arrived and the economy crashed,  the theme “It’s good for you” helped me to recognize the lifelong lessons I  would learn from facing that year’s challenges and disappointments.

This year, I’m thinking “Amp it up” is apropos. Aside from the homage to our Rodan + Fields product launch, I am excited to amp up my life in all realms. Because I am already pretty busy, I am not looking to do more. Instead, my intent is to turn up the dial on daily activities that can enhance my life. Here are a couple of examples:

Starting a conversation with a complete stranger, an attribute that once came naturally to me, has somewhat diminished with age.  As I tell my kids, by being outgoing, friendly, and open,  you never know who you’ll meet or what you will learn. Chit-chatting with a couple at an adjoining table in a restaurant or getting to know a little bit about the hotel concierge or my taxi driver while traveling the country, sometimes requires me to step outside my comfort zone. My dad has always been gifted in this area. At 87, he can still work a room like nobody’s business. So imagining him in a particular situation and asking myself, “what would my dad Harry do if he were here” helps get me going.  “Channeling” a person in my life who embodies a desired quality both inspires and motivates me.

Amping up my efforts to attack my ever growing “to-do” list on a daily basis will give me a huge sense of accomplishment. I have learned, procrastination leads to guilt and guilt takes away the satisfaction of eventually getting the job done.  Amnon is the master task-master. By the day’s end, his desk is always clean and his inbox always empty. The little bit of focused extra effort he gives toward completing a job makes all the difference. So this year I will strive to be a little more “Amnonian” in my approach to work.

So while sitting in the airport on January 2nd, I am taking the first step toward an amped up 2011. I just met Brenda, a writer of alternative medicine books and I am completing Elana’s assignment to write a blog entry for DermRF.  It’s working!

Wishing you all a year of excellent health and great achievements!

Habits that Haunt: Skimping On Sunscreen

Habits that Haunt

Derm RF | January 19, 2011 at 5:29 pm | Categories: Habits that Haunt | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-hH

Skimping on Sunscreen

The sun is the No. 1 culprit when it comes to aging. It’s easy to see what the sun has done to your skin over time. Compare the skin on the inside of your arm with that on the outside of your arm and on the back of your hands. If you’re like most people, the skin on the inside is smooth, clear, firm and unmarked, while the skin on the outside is “dry roasted”: freckled, dry, finely lined, not as firm, and possibly dotted with brown spots. And if you spend much time driving (in the U.S.), your left arm is probably worse than your right. Skin is simply closer to perfection “where the sun don’t shine.”

The most important thing you can do to keep your skin looking young, not to mention healthy, is never to expose unprotected skin to the sun. Slather your skin with a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen and apply it often. It’s the ultimate wrinkle cream.

Myth Busters: Are All Skincare Products the Same?

Myth Busters

Derm RF | January 12, 2011 at 5:21 am | Categories: Myth Busters | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-hk

All skincare products are the same.

Skincare is not one-size-fits-all. To achieve results, it is imperative to find a skincare regimen that meets your specific needs. Identify your most important skincare issue and find a regimen that is clinically proven to address that concern.  Please note, it takes a systematic approach that includes a cleanser, treatment and sunscreen to truly achieve visible results. When you combine the right ingredients, in the right formulations, in the right order to address your specific concern, the results can be amazing.

Acne & Sensitive Skin??

1083

Derm RF | January 14, 2011 at 8:31 pm | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-ht

January 14, 2011

My skin is very sensitive and I also have some acne. What should I use?

We suggest that you use the SOOTHE Regimen to help interrupt the inflammatory cascade, strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier, calm redness, and reduce irritation so that you can take comfort in having a healthy-looking, luminous complexion every day.

To address your minor acne, you may substitute the UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash for the morning cleanser every day and three times a week use it as a 10-minute mask on dry skin to deeply cleanse pores and deliver acne-healing sulfur to the skin. Formulated with chamomile (bisabolol) and aloe, Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash calms the skin to further support the clearing process.

I have been on a Rodan + Fields Regimen, but my skin does not seem to be improving.  Do you have any advice?

Use the entire Regimen on the full face, as directed, for best results. Read the inserted Regimen brochure for Doctor tips and suggestions. At anytime, you may contact the RF Connection via phone (415) 273-8000 option 3 or e-mail rfconnection@rodanandfields.com for advice or to customize your skincare routine.

Also, many times the skin changes slightly over time and the small gains go unnoticed. We recommend that you document your results in photographs before you begin and every 30 days thereafter. For clear pictures that are easy to compare follow these tips:

1)      Clear skin of makeup.

2)      Pull the hair away from the face.

3)      Choose a well lit room and use this same location every time.

4)      Take three pictures each time: front, right side and left side.

5)      As a bonus, send in your pictures and stories to the RF Connection. If your testimonial is published, you will receive a free Regimen of your choice.

How to get rid of acne marks ...

Common Questions

Derm RF | January 8, 2011 at 1:00 am | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-he

January 7, 2011

I am confused about how to treat my acne and dark acne marks. Do I buy two regimens?

No, our UNBLEMISH Regimen is a complete skincare system that combines controlling the acne cycle with treating dark marks before they are visible on the skin’s surface.  Many acne sufferers have post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), the remnant red/brown marks following a healed blemish. To address this concern, our UNBLEMISH Spot Fading Toner contains hydroquinone because we know that sun exposure triggers acne and makes your breakouts more likely to leave remnant pigmented marks, so we’ve included an SPF 20 sunscreen to this comprehensive plan of attack. The UNBLEMISH Regimen:

· Kills bacteria deep in the pore to heal blemishes and prevent future breakouts.

· Helps reduce the appearance of blotchiness and redness associated with breakouts.

· Deep cleans skin, unclogs pores and calms irritation.

· Lightens and prevents post-acne marks and discoloration.

· Protects skin from damaging UVA/UVB rays.

· Controls oil production and shine.

I recently switched from UNBLEMISH to ANTI-AGE Regimen and AMP MD and my acne came back. What should I do?

First of all, discontinue use the AMP MD Maximum Delivery System if you have active acne. Secondly, go back to treating, controlling and preventing your acne with the UNBLEMISH Regimen. Acne cannot be cured, only controlled. Once your breakouts clear, you can reduce the frequency of use to once a day and determine if that is enough medicine to keep skin clear. If so, you can begin using the ANTI-AGE Regimen and AMP MD System at night.

Habits that Haunt - Picking the Wrong Cleanser

Habits that Haunt

Derm RF | January 5, 2011 at 7:28 pm | Categories: Habits that Haunt | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-h5

Using the Wrong Facial Cleanser

Selecting the right cleanser for your skin's condition is one of the most important skincare decisions you make because the wrong cleanser may affect everything that follows. Cleansers are not only meant to remove makeup, dirt and grime but also should prepare your skin for the next step in your program. And because the act of cleansing can disrupt the skin's fragile moisture barrier, if you choose the wrong cleanser, you may be setting your skin up for future irritation.

Make 2011 your "Year of Great Skin"

Make 2011 your “Year of Great Skin”

Derm RF | January 3, 2011 at 9:12 pm | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-h0

Make 2011 your “Year of Great Skin”

For 2011, commit to a new good skin habit a month and you just might ring in 2012 looking younger than you did in 2010. We want to help you prove it.

This January, create a baseline photo to track your progress

When it comes to changing habits, seeing results really helps.  But the daily changes that come with a new skincare routine may be so subtle that you don’t even notice the cumulative benefits that are occurring over time.  Stack the deck in your favor; start the year with a baseline digital photo of your face as a reference point to track your progress throughout the year.  Here’s how to get started:

· Remove all make-up

· Comb / brush your hair off your face (use a headband if your hair is too short to tie into a ponytail)

· Find a neutral background with consistent light (use a dark colored background drape and wear a neutral colored tee shirt or tank top for best results)

· Have your photograph taken at a measured distance of three feet

· Download your photo onto a hard drive or external data storage device to reference throughout the year

· Mark your calendar to watch for new Derm RF tips every month that can help to reverse and prevent the signs of aging on your face.

Then consult Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields to match your skincare concerns with the appropriate products

Getting advice from the Doctors is as easy as connecting with a Consultant to access our Solution Tool, which recommends products based on your unique skin concerns. Visit www.rodanandfields.com to find your local Consultant. You can also refer to the Doctors national bestselling book Write Your Skin a Prescription for Change for advice on getting your best skin yet … no appointment necessary.

And tune in to Derm RF this January to find out how you can influence what matters most when it comes to warding off Father Time so you can look better tomorrow than you did yesterday.

Happy New Year,

Your Derm RF Team
