Common Questions: Dry Skin

Common Questions

Derm RF | February 26, 2011 at 1:12 am | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-iV

February 25, 2011

I just moved to Colorado and have experienced a drastic change in my usually combination skin—it’s bone dry!

Here are some high altitude tips for you:

· Slather on extra moisturizer in the morning and at night.

· UV radiation increases 10–12% for every 3,000 feet of elevation, so even if you can’t see the sun, apply sunscreen with antioxidants to protect your skin.

· Don’t forget to protect your lips as well. The sun can be relentless at higher altitudes, especially in states like Colorado, where the sun shines more than three hundred days a year.

My Doctor told me that I have seborrheic dermatitis and nothing he has given me has helped. Do you have a heavy moisturizer?

Like acne, seborrheic dermatitis is initiated by androgenic hormones and is a common

inflammatory disease of the skin known as dandruff in its mildest form. It appears as red, inflamed patches covered by oily or dry scales that may feel chapped or itchy. It can be found on the scalp, eyebrows, nose folds, temples and beard area. When localized on the face, we refer to it as “facial dandruff.” It can be caused by excessive oil production brought on by hormones or stress, a change in environment, and an inflammatory reaction to yeast. This is often worse in the winter because of the lack of humidity. Like many skin conditions, there is a genetic component, so if your parents suffer with it, you are more prone to experience it as well.

You will need more than a heavy moisturizer. Each product in the SOOTHE Regimen has been carefully formulated with ingredients and medicines specifically designed to address the causes and manifestations of sensitive skin, i.e., disruption of the skin's outer barrier, moisture loss, redness, dryness, burning and stinging. Within days to weeks depending on the severity of your condition, your skin will feel comfortable, smooth and soft with a visible reduction of facial redness.

This is a "people's choice" award so working together we can help AMP MD come out on top. There are only four days left to vote. To vote now:

  1. Click here
  2. Enter the required information at the bottom of the page and click "Continue."
  3. Then vote for Rodan + Fields ANTI-AGE AMP MD System in the Skin Care category. We encourage you to vote for non-competitive categories as well (i.e., makeup, hair care and body and nail products).

Act now and spread the word while there's still time left to secure this coveted honor for AMP MD.

Best,

Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs)

NMFs are ingredients that absorb water from the atmosphere and combine it with their own water content, allowing the outermost layers of the stratum corneum to stay hydrated and function properly. Especially during these dry, winter months, look for skincare products that feature NMFs such as glycerin, ceramides, cholesterol, triglycerides and phospholipids.

Find effective, hydrating NMFs in these Rodan + Fields products:

· Ceramides: SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash, UNBLEMISH Dual Intensive Acne Treatment, ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides SPF 20

· Cholesterol: ANTI-AGE Triple Defense Treatment SPF 30, ANTI-AGE Overnight Restorative Cream, SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash, SOOTHE UVA/UVB SPF 15 Sunscreen, SOOTHE As Needed Hydrocortizone Treatment, UNBLEMISH Dual Intensive Acne Treatment, UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion SPF 20, ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides SPF 20

· Triglycerides: ANTI-AGE Overnight Restorative Cream, ANTI-AGE Multi-Function Eye Cream, REVERSE Skin Lightening Treatment, SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash, ESSENTIALS Moisturize with Melaslow™

Myth Buster: To Exfoliate or Not?

Myth Buster

Derm RF | February 22, 2011 at 6:07 pm | Categories: Myth Busters | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-iM

MYTH: You should not exfoliate dry skin

When you moisturize and moisturize and your skin is still dry … you need to exfoliate. The layer of flaky, dead skin cells is preventing your moisturizer from penetrating. Use gentle exfoliation on the thick dry areas and follow immediately with a rich moisturizer. The same rules apply for the lips!

Common Questions: Winter Skin

Common Questions

Derm RF | February 18, 2011 at 5:19 pm | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-iF

Do I need to wear sunscreen in the winter? I barely go out and it is always cloudy.

Remember every day is “Sun”day. Just because it is not summer, don’t let your guard down in terms of the sun.  Protect skin with a broad-spectrum sunblock containing zinc oxide, avobenzone or mexoryl every day of the year, even when you can’t see the sun.  And be particularly diligent if you’re on the slopes.  UV radiation increases 10%-12% for every 3000 feet of elevation. Rodan + Fields offers five broad-spectrum sunscreens : REVERSE UVA/UVB SPF 15 Sunscreen, SOOTHE UVA/UVB SPF 15 Sunscreen, ANTI-AGE Triple Defense Treatment SPF 30 featuring SHIELDrf, UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion SPF 20, and ESSENTIALSUVA/UVB SPF 30 Sunscreen. Apply 15 minutes before heading outdoors and re-apply every 2-3 hours when exposed to day light.

My lips get really dry and flaky during cold weather—it is so embarrassing. Will the Lip Micro-Dermabrasion help this problem?

Most people carry a lip balm and re-apply it like crazy. Most formulations do not always repair dryness but coat it with occlusive ingredients. The balm wears off and you need to re-apply it pronto. It can be really addicting. Our Lip Micro-Dermabrasion is an exfoliating and conditioning treatment specially formulated for delicate lip tissue. Use this gentle exfoliator at least twice a day to remove dead skin cells and soften the skin. And try to avoid licking your lips and breathing through your mouth while you sleep; both can severely dry lips.

RFp3

Just like you wear warmer clothes in the winter months than during the summer, consider adding a skin-soothing “layer” to your skincare. Wind, cold and indoor heating all pull moisture from your skin and can leave it red, irritated or simply unhappy. RFp3, our proprietary, multitasking peptide technology, helps stop inflammation, combats toxins and pacifies irritable skin.  It’s so effective, it’s clinically proven to decrease redness, peeling, dryness, stinging and overall irritation within five minutes of use.

Rodan + Fields® skin-pacifying RFp3 peptide technology is available exclusively in SOOTHE Sensitive Skin Treatment and ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides SPF 20.

Habits that Haunt: Cranking Up the Heat

Habits that Haunt

Derm RF | February 8, 2011 at 6:34 pm | Categories: Habits that Haunt | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-it

Cranking up the heat

Indoor heaters suck moisture out of the air, making the warm air inside as difficult for skin as the cold air outside. Use a humidifier to keep the humidity indoors around 50%. You also might want to switch to a heavier moisturizer and eye cream to keep skin well hydrated for as long as your heater is running.

Great Skin Tips for Winter

Common Questions

Derm RF | February 5, 2011 at 3:07 am | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-il

February 4, 2011

My skin is very dry during the winter; do you have a few tips?
Yes - hydrate your skin from the outside in. As the weather gets crisper and drier, you may want to apply a light moisturizer more frequently OR switch to a heavier moisturizer and eye cream to keep skin well hydrated. Since it’s the outside humidity that determines how dry your skin is – not how much water you consume – if you’re feeling dry, slather on that moisturizer. Rodan + Fields offers ESSENTIALS Moisturize with Melaslow. This light-weight lotion dries to a matte finish to help hydrate and lock in moisture. Our SOOTHE Sensitive Skin Treatment not only moisturizes skin but reduces redness, dryness, peeling and irritation in as little as five minutes. And since the humidity in your house should be kept at 50%, remember to turn on the humidifier.

I’ve been so cold lately that I take a long hot bath to warm up, but now my skin is really dry and flaky. What should I do?

Although you may be tempted to take long, hot baths or showers to ward of that winter chill, avoid them; they actually draw moisture out of your skin and make you itchy.  Instead, go for tepid, quick showers.  If you soak in a warm bath, we recommend using bath oil. Other tips: Use a loofah sponge or a body micro-dermabrasion product regularly with warm water to boost circulation and remove dead skin cells. Follow this by applying a heavy moisturizer to damp skin after bathing or showering to seal in extra moisture. Use products containing humectants such as glycerin, ceramides or triglycerides to attract water to skin and hold onto moisture. Keep humidity in your home at about 50% or use a humidifier.

Winterizing Your Skincare Routine

Letter from the Editor

Derm RF | February 2, 2011 at 12:53 am | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-i7

Winterizing Your Skincare Routine

How are you staying warm this winter?

a.       Cranking indoor heat

b.      Wearing lots of wool

c.       Taking long, hot showers or baths

d.      All of the above

With snow on the ground in 48 of the 50 states in the U.S., most people are doing some if not all of the above to stay warm. While we’ve learned to winterize everything from our cars to our boats in preparation for cold winter weather … we often miss on the best way to winterize our skincare. In fact, all of the above habits can wreak havoc on our skin.

In winter, low temperatures, low humidity and strong, harsh winds disrupt the skin’s natural lipid barrier, causing increased water loss that leads to inflammation, further damage to the barrier and further moisture loss. It’s a downward spiral unless something is done to stop it.

This February, spend a few minutes learning how to arm your medicine cabinets with the right ingredients to help your skin look as healthy and luminous as it does in the summer months. Tune in to Derm RF for the tips and tricks to get you there this winter, special insights from Dr. Kathy Fields and a chance to win.

Here’s to staying warm and dry this month!

Sincerely,

Your Derm RF Team
