My eyes get red and irritated from medicated washes, do you have any advice for when I use the Sulfur Wash?

Here are some tips to protect your eyes and reduce getting the wash into the eye area:

1) Put a towel close by the sink.

2) Only use the fingertips when gently massaging the UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash over the face.  Avoid the eye area.

3) When rinsing, splash water over the face and keep the eyes closed tightly.

4) When the silky feeling of the wash is gone from the skin, rinse once more and dry the face with the towel.

How can I conceal a blemish?

Soak a Q-tip in an eye brightener like Visine, and lay it on plastic and place in the freezer for thirty minutes. Lay it over the blemish for one to two minutes, gently turning it so that a cold part is against the blemish to reduce the redness and swelling. Allow to dry, then lightly dab and blend an opaque concealer over the area and feather out the edges. Layer the ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides over the face lightly and touch up any areas with the concealer.

Myth Busters: Do Greasy Foods Cause Acne

Myth Busters

Derm RF | August 24, 2010 at 5:52 pm | Categories: Myth Busters | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-c7

Greasy foods cause acne

Contrary to popular belief, research proves that occasionally eating french fries or chocolate are not the likely suspects causing your breakouts. However, recent studies do suggest a possible correlation between acne and high glycemic diets associated with processed, sugary or carbohydrate-laden foods. Milk products also may contain hormones that trigger an acne flare-up. While diet isn’t a primary cause of acne, healthy eating habits will always serve you well, help you to look your best and lessen the negative effects of inflammation and stress on your body.

Confessions of a Dermatologist

Confessions of a Dermatologist

Dr. Katie Rodan | August 23, 2010 at 6:54 pm | Categories: Confessions of a Dermatologist | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-c4

By Dr. Katie Rodan

I, Katie Rodan, the creator of the best-selling acne system in the world, have acne. It started when I was a teenager and although it has gotten much better in my adult years, it is still something I have to deal with every day.

You might be surprised to hear this, because on most days my skin is clear and blemish-free. But those results are only achieved through a daily, full-face routine to stop the acne process in its tracks.

On those rare instances when I do have a pimple, here’s my emergency pimple fix:

Step 1: I apply an ice pack to the pimple for ten to fifteen minutes to reduce redness and swelling around the breakout.

Step 2: I clean the area with a sulfur-based wash and apply a treatment lotion containing sulfur as well, which can be purchased without a prescription. This keeps my pores freer and cleaner.

Step 3: I follow with benzoyl peroxide to keep the pores clear.

Step 4: Finally, I apply a thin layer of mineral peptides to hide the blemish and help calm the inflammation.

If a pimple resurfaces at a really inopportune time, like before a big event or TV appearance, I’ll even have my medical associate give me a cortisone shot to clear up the pimple in less than 24 hours.

To really keep acne in check, there’s no substitution for a full-face, daily medicated skincare routine. But this emergency pimple fix is great for helping in a pinch!

Will the UNBLEMISH Regimen help my rosacea?

Rosacea is a flush/blush disorder with facial redness, broken capillaries and often acne-like bumps. Use the SOOTHE Regimen with gentle ingredients, OTC skin protectors and RFp3 to shield against environmental aggressors that trigger inflammation and breakouts.

UNBLEMISH Regimen with Clarifying Toner may reduce breakouts on rosacea-prone skin.

I have sun damage, acne and post-acne marks. Do I use the UNBLEMISH Regimen or the REVERSE Regimen?

Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields feel that bumps trump everything in skincare so we recommend you use our UNBLEMISH Regimen with Spot Fading Toner twice a day to control the acne cycle. The UNBLEMISH regimen contains hydroquinone to fight post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, helping you achieve the results you sought from the REVERSE regimen.

I have an allergy to Benzoyl Peroxide, can I still get results while using just three of the products in the UNBLEMISH Regimen?

If you have a known allergy to Benzoyl Peroxide and developed redness, itching and swelling in the past, then you should not use UNBLEMISH Dual Intensive Acne Treatment. Try the other products within the UNBLEMISH Regimen to help manage your acne and substitute SOOTHE Sensitive Skin Treatment.

Sensitive Skin Treatment is a hydrating cream with exclusive RFp3 peptide technology to help shield skin against biological and environmental aggressors that increase inflammation, acne and aging. RFp3 also interrupts the inflammatory cascade to promote smooth, clear, healthy-looking skin.

Sales Support Manager at Rodan + Fields® Dermatologists

I have a confession. I have oily skin. For most of my adult life I have avoided using moisturizers and sunscreens in an effort to reduce the oil in my skin. I would cake my poor face with powder in an effort to reduce the shine, but in the process I was only making my skin and appearance even worse! When I moved out West from the humid climate of Florida I thought, finally, I can get some relief from my oily skin. But I discovered it followed me across the country; I couldn’t escape my oily skin.

Last year when UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion SPF 20 was introduced at convention, it was love at first use.  Every morning I use a little dab of the UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion on my T-zone before applying my ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides. Not only does it reduce the oil in my skin, I am also protecting myself from harmful UV rays.  I keep an extra Oil Control lotion in my purse so I can reapply before heading outside at lunch to give my face full protection from the sun. I am off the face powder for the first time since I was a teenager and my skin has never looked better.

Another Reason To Go Hands-Free

Habits that Haunt

Derm RF | August 17, 2010 at 5:32 pm | Categories: Habits that Haunt | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-bT

Too much time “on” the mobile

A moving violation is not the only thing you will get if you are talking on your cell phone while driving. Constant pressure and perspiration from having your mobile phone to your face may indeed contribute to the inflammation that ultimately leads to breakouts. Go hands free; it is safer AND better for your skin!

Common Questions about Acne

Common Questions

When should someone begin using the UNBLEMISH Regimen?

UNBLEMISH Regimen can be used at the first signs of acne and when experiencing post-acne marks.

The Spot Fading Toner is safe to be used on those 12 years of age and older and you may check with a pediatrician for children under 12 years of age or have them use the Clarifying Toner.

Sunscreens make my acne worse, so I’m afraid to use the Oil Control Lotion SPF 20 Sunscreen.

This is an urban myth. Actually, sun exposure increases cell turnover, blocking pores and causing more breakouts, so skipping sunscreen may make it worse. UNBLEMISH Oil Control Lotion SPF 20 has been specifically developed for acne-prone skin, and is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) and contains time-released oil-control. Another alternative is the ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides SPF 20 Sunscreen.

Which product of UNBLEMISH will help me the most? I would like to try it just to see if it works.

Each step of UNBLEMISH Regimen delivers a specific medicine to penetrate and unplug pores, lighten post-acne marks, kill bacteria, reduce oil and protect with broad-spectrum sunscreen. Using just one product cannot deliver the results that you seek for this complex skin condition.

Sulfur not only unclogs pores, but is the only acne medication that also calms the skin. Hydroquinone fades post-acne marks. Benzoyl Peroxide reduces acne causing bacteria and helps heal the skin. The broad-spectrum sunscreen also helps control oil. Each step builds upon the last to address the complex issue of acne. Skipping any one of these steps can minimize results.

Ingredients of the Month

Benzoyl Peroxide

For more than 40 years, dermatologists have considered benzoyl peroxide (BPO) to be the gold standard for acne treatment and prevention. When it comes to attacking acne, benzoyl peroxide works on several fronts.  Its primary function is in killing P. acnes bacteria. It also acts as a “keratolytic” agent, helping to remove the dead cells that clog pores. And finally, it is mildly anti-inflammatory.  Now you know why we think it is worth its weight in gold!  In fact, a large scale clinical study published in The Lancet demonstrated that BPO is more effective than oral antibiotics, like tetracycline and minocycline, in treating acne without the risk of bacterial resistance.

Benzoyl peroxide is a key ingredient in Rodan + Fields® UNBLEMISH Dual Intensive Acne Treatment. With a dual-chamber deliver system, this formula ensures optimized BPO delivery and acne-fighting benefits.

Sulfur

Sulfur clears pores by shedding dead skin cells and helps to heal preexisting comedones (blackheads and whiteheads). It also provides an immediate benefit by reducing acne’s tell-tale redness and swelling. This remarkable OTC medicine has been used to treat acne for over a thousand years, yet is sometimes avoided due to its odor. Thankfully, advanced processing and new purification technologies can now produce much lower odor sulfur materials for skincare products, and what little odor still remains can be easily masked, so there is no longer any reason not to take advantage of this highly effective acne-treating ingredient.

Find effective sulfur (and a calming lavender scent) in Rodan + Fields UNBLEMISH Acne Treatment Sulfur Wash.

Dermatology 911: Are you a picker?

Dermatology 911

Dr. Kathy Fields | August 9, 2010 at 9:28 pm | Categories: Dermatology 911 | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-bw

By Dr. Kathy Fields

Patient Name: Lisa*

Gender: Female

Age: 15 years old

Concern: acne scars

Doctor’s Notes:

Lisa has struggled with acne since she was 12, but finally has it under control with a full face treatment regimen. Unfortunately, Lisa was a picker. After watching her pick and pop for months, her mom finally brought her in, worried about the pitting and scarring she started to notice on her daughter’s cheeks.

Unfortunately, Lisa’s mom was late bringing her in and the scarring and pitting reached the deeper layers of Lisa’s skin making it difficult to treat. Several uncomfortable laser treatments and over $1,000 later, Lisa’s skin was smoother and her acne scarring had diminished.

Lisa learned the hard (and expensive) way that popping zits won’t make them go away. In fact, picking zits is a surefire way to make sure you have souvenirs for a lifetime in the form of scars and remnant dark marks. Picking is a natural inclination, but as parents we need to keep an eye on our children and be proactive about getting them help. If you see your child picking her (or his) face, get her to a dermatologist before it’s too late. The only way to get clear skin is to treat the full face every day with an acne-focused skincare regimen and leave the extractions to professionals … like your local dermatologist.

Too much sun can cause more than brown spots!!

Myth Busters

Derm RF | August 10, 2010 at 7:06 pm | Categories: Myth Busters | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-bA

Sun exposure helps clear acne

Over time, unprotected sun exposure actually causes breakouts. While a tan masks the redness of a breakout and may in fact dry pimples up a bit faster, the increased cell turnover caused by sun exposure builds up more dead cells. As these dead cells pile up, pores become blocked, causing more breakouts. On top of that, UV rays will intensify post-acne dark marks. Sunscreen will not increase breakouts or make you look greasy if you find the right one. Look for a non-comedogenic SPF with UVA protection and oil control for best results.

Blemishes?

Common Questions

Mary Radford, RN | August 6, 2010 at 7:06 pm | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-bs

August 6, 2010

My skin is looking clear. Now what should I do?

Acne is not curable but it is treatable, controllable and preventable. If the UNBLEMISH Regimen is helping to clear your skin, stay on it as there is no limit to how long you can use it. You can reduce the frequency of use to once a day and see if that is enough medicine to keep your skin clear. If you find you need more medication, simply increase to twice daily.

If you discontinue the UNBLEMISH Regimen, it is likely that your acne will return as it is caused by genetics and hormones. Regular maintenance is key to achieving a clear complexion.

I only break out once a week or in one place, do I need the entire UNBLEMISH Regimen?

Yes. Even one pimple means you have acne. The UNBLEMISH Regimen provides the right ingredients, in the right formulations, in the right order to address all aspects of the treatment and prevention of acne.

In order to receive the benefits of the system, the entire regimen must be used on a consistent basis.

I’m using UNBLEMISH Regimen and my skin is becoming dry. What should I do?

Everyone's skin is different and you may experience dryness from the medications in UNBLEMISH Regimen that are clearing pores to combat breakouts. We recommend you layer one of our non-comedogenic moisturizers over UNBLEMISH Dual Intensive Acne Treatment such as SOOTHE Sensitive Skin Treatment, ESSENTIALS Moisturize with Melaslow, or ANTI-AGE Night Recovery Cream.

Sorry to say...spot treatments for acne are largely ineffective :(

Habits that Haunt

Combating acne with spot treatments

The pimple on your face today has been forming under the skin for over two weeks. Because the appearance of the bump is the final step in the process, spot treatments are largely ineffective. In fact, spot-treating acne makes as much sense as brushing only the tooth with the cavity while ignoring the rest of your mouth. To effectively combat acne you must treat your entire face every day to stop acne before it’s visible on the skin’s surface.

Acne

Derm RF | August 2, 2010 at 7:30 pm | Categories: Uncategorized | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-bi

You may notice the buzz level about acne escalating this time of year as the media focuses on teens’ desire to look good as they head back to school. But as many women who are not teenagers are keenly aware, acne is not seasonal and is of concern at every age. In fact, it’s estimated that 30-40 percent of women develop acne at one time or another during their adult years.

Acne ranges in intensity, from the monthly blemish that appears like clockwork with your menstrual cycles to chronic breakouts around your jaw line. Regardless of the frequency of your breakouts, you need to treat your skin on a daily basis to keep it clear.

The good news is that today there are numerous options, from topical treatments to low-dose oral contraceptives, to treat, control and prevent future acne breakouts. But keep in mind that there are no quick fixes—once you get your acne under control, it may take many years of ongoing, preventative treatment to keep your breakouts from resurfacing. Tune in to Derm RF this month for insider tips on keeping breakouts at bay, acne confessions from two of the most respected names in acne treatment, chances to win and more.

Sincerely,

Your Derm RF Team
