Rethink the Ink

Rethink the Ink

The enthusiasm for Stieg Larsson’s “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” is doing more than simply entertain— intriguing heroine Lisbeth Salander is also promoting a dangerous trend … tattoos. While Lisbeth may make hacking computers and sporting tattoos look cool, there’s more to the story than meets the eye. Tune into this week’s webisode of Skinpact News, “Rethink the Ink” for insights from Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields on why you may want to opt for alternative forms of self-expression. Winter is here, but it doesn't have to mean dry skin ...

In the winter, we turn up the thermostat in our homes which removes humidity from the air and causes dehydration of our skin. We also wear more clothing, which can wick moisture from the surface of the skin. Dry skin is thinner, more fragile and has less of a protective barrier. Once the skin’s barrier is compromised, moisture loss continues and the skin is vulnerable to the entrance of irritants and infections, often leading to a red, itchy rash.

Take a warm (not hot bath) and apply ESSENTIALS Daily Body Moisturizer after patting the skin dry to tackle body moisturization in a whole new way. Featuring RF-Dcell technology, Daily Body Moisturizer prolongs the lifespan of healthy cells so skin is more resilient to the climate-induced stressors that cause skin to feel dry, tight and uncomfortable.  RF-Dcell acts almost like “psychotherapy for skin,” calming frenzied cells down, normalizing the rate of cell maturation and in the end, making skin function more efficiently. The result: skin is able to retain moisture and remain comfortable when challenged by climate and other environmental aggressors.

Does Your Lip Balm Do All This?

Popular lip balms will simply coat the lips and when it wears off, you’re back to where you started. Treating lips with ANTI-AGE Lip Renewing Serum nightly helps to restore definition and keeps lips looking naturally full and youthful. Used nightly, each mono-dose capsule helps lips retain natural moisturizing factors, smooths lip texture, reduces the appearance of lip wrinkles, and provides protective antioxidant benefits.  The result is fuller, firmer, smoother, hydrated and more defined-looking lips.

For maintenance during the day use ESSENTIALS Lip Shield SPF 25.  This hydrating lip balm soothes, softens and protects lips from the aging and burning effects of the sun with SHIELDrf, an exclusive complex of stabilized avobenzone and antioxidant/anti-inflammatory colorless carotenoids for effective UVA sunscreen protection. It also conditions lips with collagen-stimulating peptides to smooth lip texture, lipid molecules for long-term moisturization and dimethicone to protect the delicate moisture barrier. Vitamins A, C and E provide antioxidant protection, while shea butter, avocado and sunflower seed oil hydrate and moisturize.

Technology I Love ...

Ingredients of the Month

by Derm RF

RFp3

Life happens, and despite our best intentions and efforts, triggers can sneak through, causing physical and emotional stress which can manifest itself as skin that appears irritated or inflamed. RFp3, an exclusive combination of two peptides—Skin Soothing Peptide and Skin Detoxifying Peptide— and a protease inhibitor, stops the inflammatory cascade by interrupting the “domino” fall midstream.

Don’t let your appearance add to your stress, look for RFp3 in SOOTHE Sensitive Skin Treatment and ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides SPF 20.

RF COLD FISSION™

When your skin is dry, tight and uncomfortable, it is natural to reach for a moisturizer to relive the dryness and soothe your skin. However, most moisturizers derive their creamy, rich consistencies from emulsifiers such as PEG and stearic acid, which while fine for most people, can be problematic for sensitive skin. RF COLD FISSION™ is a patent-pending technology that utilizes a mechanical process, rather than emulsifiers, to create rich, hydrating, barrier-repairing moisturizers, making it the perfect partner for sensitive skin.

Now you can soothe and hydrate without irritation. You’ll find RF COLD FISSION™ technology in SOOTHE Moisture Replenishing Cream.

Good News for the Holiday ... There Are a Few Quick Fixes!

Myth: There aren’t any quick fixes when it comes to Skincare

Whether you’re hoping  for a kiss under the mistletoe or just getting camera-ready for holiday photos, there are small steps you can take weeks and days before the big moment to look your best.

If you have 12 days: Assume the worst and plan for the best. Meaning, if you have occasional sensitive skin peaks or the predictable acne valley, start your treatment regimen before your visual symptoms start. This will keep your skin happy and healthy looking.

If you have three days: Add in some gentle exfoliation to lighten and brighten skin. Keep skin moisturized and apply an eye cream daily with optical brighteners to keep the eye area bright and luminous.

And for an emergency pimple fix, here’s what we recommend:

1.              Apply ice buffered by a napkin for 10 to 15 minutes to reduce redness and telltale swelling.

2.              Cleanse and apply a treatment lotion containing sulfur, which can be purchased without a prescription. Sulfur helps to unplug pores and shrink swelling.

3.              Follow with a product containing 1% hydrocortisone or benzoyl peroxide (both are available over the counter) to keep pores freer and cleaner.

4.              Apply a thin layer of a medicated concealer.

5.              If time permits, get a cortisone shot from your dermatologist. The results can be miraculous.

So, as the days tick down toward the big event, rest assured you’ll be able to handle any skincare emergency that comes your way.

Feeling a Little Dry This Winter? Don't do this ...

Habits that Haunt

by Derm RF

The Best Way to Fight Dryness is with H2O

If you’re upping your skin’s water supply with frequent spritzing as a way to increase moisture, you may be creating a problem instead of solving one. Unless you apply a barrier-repairing moisturizer (one which contains dimethicone, glycerin or hyaluronic acid) immediately after spritzing, you’ll actually dry out skin because as water evaporates it draws moisture away from all layers of your skin. Feel the need to spritz? Just follow with lightly patting damp skin with a great moisturizer. Not only will you improve hydration over the long haul, you’ll get an immediately refreshed and youthful glow.

Are you Sensitive & Oily?

Common Questions  by Mary Radford, RN

I'm concerned that the SOOTHE Moisture Replenishing Cream will be too much for my oily skin.

Because sensitive skin is often dry and irritated, the barrier function is weakened, which in turn causes the skin to become even more damaged. SOOTHE Moisture Replenishing Cream is formulated to nurture and protect sensitive reactive skin by replenishing skin's natural moisturizing factors as it smoothes, hydrates and nourishes. However, if your skin is excessively oily, use SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash, apply Sensitive Skin Treatment and layer the Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 in the morning. Blot shine away with UNBLEMISH Blot Papers throughout the day. In the evening, cleanse with SOOTHE Gentle Cream Wash, follow with Sensitive Skin Treatment and apply Moisture Replenishing Cream as the last step

Will SOOTHE Moisture Replenishing Cream cause my skin to breakout?

Acne is triggered by stress, hormonal changes, mechanical friction, bacteria or a change in medications. SOOTHE is formulated for hyper-irritable skin to help calm and is less likely to react adversely to your skin, however, if your skin is prone to breakouts, refer to the Solution Tool to discover how the doctors combine the UNBLEMISH Regimen with the SOOTHE Regimen.
