RF Ingredient of the Week-Retinol

Retinol

The dermatological staple, retinol, is an exfoliant at heart. Retinol works by sloughing off old, dead cells and encouraging the growth of healthy, young cells. In addition to encouraging cell renewal, retinol helps stop collagen breakdown for less-lined, firmer, brighter skin. With so many benefits, retinol is an ideal anti-aging ingredient great for daily use. Find retinol in Rodan + Fields ANTI-AGE Night Renewing Serum and REVERSE Skin Lightening Treatment. If you have very sensitive skin, start a retinol-containing product every other night, advancing to nightly, as tolerated, to minimize irritation. A product with acetyl glucosamine, like Rodan + Fields ANTI-AGE Hydrating Toner, may also be a good alternative for gentle exfoliation of sensitive skin. http://jenny.myrandf.com

Help your baby's BOO-BOOs with SOOTHE

Scarlett fell off her bike today. Not a "huge" fall ... I mean, I'm not sure a "huge" fall can really even happen on a 14" pink princess bike with training wheels - it might even be only a 12" bike! But, nevertheless, we had some skinned, bleeding knees to take care of. Actually, just one knee was actually "bleeding", but if you knew Scarlett & band-aids ... any excuse to have another Barbie or Hello Kitty plastered somewhere on the body & she's all for it! So, I'd heard of another R+F consultant who had used SOOTHE on a similar road rash with great results. As usual, when Mommy wants to put something on a cut or scratch, I had to do a lot of cajoling to actually get the SOOTHE #2 Sensitive Skin Treatment put on the scratch. But when I was successful, I got a reward ... a big smile from Scarlett & "that didn't even hurt, Mommy." I know, sweet pea, I told you so! I'm looking forward to seeing how quickly this one heals!

Patient Name: Alex*

Gender: Female

Age: 32 years old

Concern: intense irritation and redness

Doctor’s Notes:

I had been seeing Alex regularly for micro-dermabrasion treatments. All was going well for the first few weeks and she was thrilled with the results, until one day, she called complaining of intense irritation.

We talked it over and I learned she had started using retinol at night, a big “uh-oh” for micro-dermabrasion patients. Most people don’t understand that retinol is a form of chemical exfoliation. And that, combined with the mechanical exfoliation of micro-dermabrasion, can disrupt the skin’s barrier. Alex’s irritation and “sudden” outbreak of sensitive skin without a prior history of it was a sign of cosmetic intolerance syndrome, the skin’s way of fighting back against over-stimulation.

A word of caution … read the labels! Between your personal care toiletries, skincare products and makeup, you could literally be layering hundreds of chemicals onto your skin every day. So beware and don’t overdo it, Doctors orders!

Warning: Using Harsh Exfoliants

Habits that Haunt

Derm RF | April 20, 2010 at 7:05 pm | Categories: Habits that Haunt | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-6h

Using Harsh Exfoliants

“Natural” isn’t necessarily better. Physical exfoliants like ground walnut shells and apricot pits that have gained popularity in cleansers are best avoided. Their sharp, jagged edges can cause micro-tears in the skin, opening the door for irritants and infectious agents to enter the skin. If you are looking for a grainy, exfoliating cleanser, opt for a product containing small, round and uniform particles like dimethicone or polyethylene beads. Scrubs made with sugar and salt crystals that dissolve when moistened are great “natural” alternatives.

Myth Busters-No Pain, No Gain

Myth Busters

Derm RF | April 19, 2010 at 8:02 pm | Categories: Myth Busters | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-6e

MYTH: No Pain No Gain

Well, yes and no. There are some in-office exfoliation procedures like chemical peels, micro-dermabrasion and lasers that yield excellent results but may require several days recovery time. At-home exfoliation products and procedures are less aggressive and, if done properly, should not result in any “down-time.”  If your attempts to “do-it yourself” cause redness, peeling, itching and scaling, SLOW DOWN. You may be overdoing it and breaking your skin’s protective barrier. Give your skin a rest and help it heal with a soothing moisturizer containing anti-inflammatory peptides or botanical ingredients. Also, don’t forget to apply a broad spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen daily to protect your recovering skin.

Skin Care Ingredient of the Week from the Doctors who created Proactiv ...

Ingredient of the Week

Derm RF | April 15, 2010 at 8:33 pm | Categories: Ingredient of the Week | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-5Y

Hydroxy Acids

Hydroxy acids are chemical exfoliators that work by dissolving the adhesions between cells in the epidermis, allowing skin-dulling dead skin cells to easily slough off to promote cell renewal. There are three classes of hydroxy acids: alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) and poly hydroxy acids (PHAs).

· AHAs: These exfoliators work on the top layer of the skin to help increase cell turnover. Commonly used AHAs include glycolic acid (derived from cane sugar) and lactic acid (derived from milk). Used in lower concentrations, AHAs are appropriate for home use; however, you may experience sensory irritation (stinging) when first using AHAs. By starting slowly, with intermittent use in the first couple of weeks, most people will find that their skin accommodates and the stinging greatly diminishes or disappears completely. Find lactic acid in Rodan + Fields REVERSE Deep Exfoliating Wash and REVERSE Skin Lightening Treatment, and glycolic acid in UNBLEMISH Clarifying Toner.

· PHAs: This up-and-coming class of hydroxy acids may have varying benefits depending on the molecular configuration. PHAs include lactobionic acid and gluconolactone. Look for them in future Rodan + Fields products.

· BHAs: Oil soluble, BHAs penetrate into the pore to help remove dead cells that build up and entrap acne-causing oil and bacteria. Salicylic acid is the only BHA and can be found in Rodan + Fields UNBLEMISH Spot Fading Toner.

Common Questions

Common Questions

Derm RF | April 16, 2010 at 10:05 pm | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-65

April 16, 2010

I only breakout with blemishes once a month and I have fine lines and wrinkles. What should I use?

The UNBLEMISH Regimen provides the right ingredients, in the right formulations, in the right order to address all aspects of the treatment and prevention of acne. This Multi-Med® Therapy four-step system includes a combination of acne fighting and skin lightening OTC medicines to help clear skin, kill bacteria, prevent post-acne dark marks, control oil production and protect against UV damage. In order to receive the benefits of the system, the entire regimen must be used on a consistent basis.

You may wish to include several ANTI-AGE products or the entire ANTI-AGE Regimen that uses OTC medicines, proven peptide technology and active cosmetics to combat the signs of aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, enlarged pores and loss of firmness. By combining the right ingredients, in the right formulations, and using them in the right order, the regimen:

· Signals natural collagen production with peptide technology to help firm skin, increase elasticity and diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

· Boosts cell energy and brightens skin for a younger, more vibrant complexion.

· Exfoliates to smooth and refine skin’s surface while minimizing the look of enlarged pores.

· Protects skin against trans-epidermal moisture loss, UVA/UVB damage and environmental stress.

We invite you to receive a customized recommendation combining these products from Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields. Please visit a Consultant’s Personal Website for access to our Solution Tool.

I’m using the ANTI-AGE Regimen and my skin is a little flakey. What should I do?

In this case, a little flakiness is a good sign as it indicates that your skin's metabolism is increasing and new cells are pushing old cells off as your skin renews. You simply need to help buff off old, dry skin. We suggest the ENHANCEMENTS Micro-Dermabrasion Paste for effective at-home exfoliation. This gentle and effective scrub signals skin to naturally renew itself and increase collagen production, evening skin tone and smoothing skin texture for a more youthful-looking, radiant complexion. This oil-free formula features Vitamins C & E and polishes skin with salt and sugar granules that melt away. Use ENHANCEMENTS Micro-Dermabrasion Paste one to three times a week in place of the ANTI-AGE Gentle Exfoliating Wash.

Employee Favorite

Derm RF | April 14, 2010 at 9:14 pm | Categories: Tips | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-5R

By Lori Bush

President and General Manager of Rodan + Fields

I’ve learned from Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields about how dermatologists look at different areas of the face as distinct cosmetic units; so I’ll take the liberty of selecting different favorite products for each area of my face. And for me, one of the most troubling areas is the skin around my lips …  nothing says “old” like lipstick bleed lines. That’s why I love ENHANCEMENTS Lip Micro-Dermabrasion. The benefits of very minimal extra effort (and cost) are quite profound. Using the Lip Micro-Dermabrasion regularly helps my lips maintain their natural rosy color and improves the lip definition often referred to as the “cupid’s bow”. Most importantly, I don’t worry at all about lipstick bleed lines. Good things really do come in small packages.

Happy Birthday to My Almost-Perfect Scarlett

Scarlett turned four on Saturday. Amazing, really. It just seems like yesterday she got here. The past four years have seen me moving from Superhero expert to Princess expert ... from feeding Kincaid anything we ate to adjusting to Scarlett's persnickety eating habits. But, all in all, she's just about as perfect as any princess-engrossed, pink-loving, smile that melts your heart, can always get herself out of trouble with a sweet cut of her eyes, four-year-old little girl.

To be honest, she really only came into the world with one stubborn, hard-to-resolve issue -- eczema. Actually, she didn't come into the world with it, I guess it started at about 10 months or so. At first it was worst in the spring & I could really correlate her outbreaks with spending time in the grass. Although that is probably a major trigger, she now struggles with it all through the winter as well ... which is more common because of the dry air. Sadly, her outbreaks can become terrible broken sores if I do not really keep up with treating it.

At any rate, I have a drawer full of "eczema-fixing" products. Monetarily they run the gambit in cost ... but considering that not one of them worked very well, they were all VERY expensive! The only thing I'd been able to find that worked was a steroid cream ... but due to side effects, you have to be very careful with how often this is used ... so really not a great option. The pediatrician's solution is to just lather her up in Aquaphor. Really? Have you ever tried to walk around or put on clothes when you are covered in what is basically an extra thick petroleum jelly? Not a very practical solution unless I want my daughter to collect lint everywhere she goes or have her clothes sticking to her in strange places. Sometimes I really wonder about exactly what they are teaching in med school. I mean, obviously, they haven't tried to get through the day lathered up in Aquaphor themselves, have they? Is this a serious recommendation - or just one of those they make up when they really don't have a good answer & just don't want to admit it? Not that Aquaphor won't help...if you want to sit in the bathtub all day & not touch anything or wear any clothes, I'm sure it works swell.

So what's a Mom to do? While not really wanting to add to my "eczema product graveyard", at the same time, I still have a little princess that needed help with her eczema, so I decided to try one more product after I joined Rodan+Fields. These docs have developed an amazing product for sensitive skin & it was touted to work on rosacea and eczema as well. Well, might as well try it, I thought! What do I have to lose? Nothing ... because the docs offer a 60-day, empty-bottle, money-back guarantee on all their products!!

Well, you probably guessed it ... it worked!! It is called SOOTHE & since I've been using it on Scarlett, her eczema has never been more under control. She has had no skin breaks or terrible bouts since I've started using SOOTHE & I've not had to use the steroid cream even once!

So does someone you know suffer with eczema? What do you have to lose? Just like me, nothing except super-dry, rashy, bleeding skin ... skin is a beautiful thing, and you can wear it well!
