Hydroquinone & Exfoliants

Ingredients of the Month: Hydroquinone and Exfoliants

Hydroquinone

Used by dermatologists to safely even skin tone by fading hyperpigmented areas, hydroquinone is the only FDA approved skin lightening ingredient and is unmatched in its clinically proven ability to lighten discoloration. While it’s available by prescription at a four percent concentration, the over-the-counter- approved two percent formulas are equally effective over time—and without the sensitivity side effects some people experience at a higher concentration. But be sure to use a broad spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin all year round, or your efforts will be in vain.
You can find hydroquinone in Rodan + Fields® REVERSE Skin Lightening Toner and REVERSE Skin Lightening Treatment.

Exfoliants

The term “exfoliate” literally means to remove layers. In skin care, exfoliation is a key component of undoing summer damage.  By removing layers of damaged, dull, dead skin cells, you can instantly improve the tone and texture of your skin and enhance the effectiveness of your other skincare products. Look for products that contain chemical exfoliants such as hydroxy acid or physical exfoliants like polyethylene beads, dimethicone beads, and sugar and salt for best results.
You’ll find both hydroxy acids and polyethylene beads in Rodan + Fields REVERSE Deep Exfoliating Wash.

Schooling Your Skin

Letter from the Editor: Schooling Your Skin

September 1, 2012 at 10:03 am  Leave a comment

September is here, and across America pool bags have been replaced by book bags and swimsuits have been retired in favor of the latest fall fashions. But just because you’ve packed away beach towels and flip-flops doesn’t mean all evidence of your fun in the sun is gone. Your skin is often a reminder of just how much sun exposure you received during the “dog days of summer.” The good news is, you can clean the slate by registering your skin for an advanced course in anti-aging. What’s on the skin syllabus? Some serious studying up on just what your skin needs to make the grade this fall.
If you want out of skin detention, tune in to Derm RF all month long for tips and tricks from Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields on making the sins of summer fade so you can get an “A” in anti-aging 101.

The Truth About Ticks & Lyme Disease

Myth Busters: All Ticks Carry Lyme Disease

Ticks have gotten a bad rap for carrying Lyme disease, but in truth, only deer ticks carry the disease, and not all deer ticks are infected. Regardless, if you have been out and about in grassy or wooded areas, do a full body check for ticks as soon as you get home. It takes more than 24 hours to transmit Lyme disease so early detection is key. As you look yourself over, pay special attention to the back of your neck, armpits and scalp.
If you do find a tick, don’t panic. Removal is simple. Contact your health care provider for next steps.
