What is the correct information and advice on sunscreens?

Sunscreens are just that. They do not block the sun but simply screen the UV rays.

· Be certain the sunscreen you apply offers UVA and UVB protection.

· For best results, apply the sunscreen as part of your morning routine.

· For outdoor activity, apply the sunscreen every 30 minutes before leaving the house and reapply immediately before going out.

· Sunscreens are not waterproof. It will come off in the water or with perspiration so when swimming or perspiring, apply sunscreen every hour.

· To prevent telltale aging, use sunscreen on the neck, hands and ears. Men who are balding should use sunscreen on their heads.

· Since SPF testing is performed in the laboratory under ideal conditions, many things such as amount applied, humidity and perspiration affect true SPF. Consider SPF only as a guideline. More is better when it comes to application.

· Use one teaspoon for the face and one ounce of sunscreen for the body but regardless of the amount of sunscreen applied, try to avoid sun exposure from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

· Sunscreens don’t add up; two layers of SPF 15 equal a more effective layer of SPF 15, not an SPF 30.

I am never outside so I don’t wear sunscreen—it just feels so thick. So can I skip it?

Few realize that hours of incidental sun exposure, whether from sitting in a sunny office, commuting on the freeway, or walking the dog, can be more damaging if we neglect to protect ourselves from it on a daily basis. And since 80% of the sun’s rays penetrate clouds, you aren’t safe on gloomy days either. Every day is sun-day according to your skin. Just 20 minutes of sun exposure a day adds up to two straight weeks (that’s 14 eight-hour days) of exposure over the course of a year. You wouldn’t spend two weeks baking in the sun without sunscreen, would you? This proves how important daily sun protection really is. Check this out … notice the difference in the skin on your inner arm versus your outer arm. As you can see in the toasted outer arm, incidental sun exposure adds up.
